In Kochi, the government has directed a compensation of Rs 25,000 to be paid to Sojish of Nettoor as per the state human rights commission's order. This compensation, specified by the additional chief secretary of the home department, will be deducted from the salary of the accused former SI of Panangad in three equal payments. The commission's chairman, Justice JB Kosi, had mandated this compensation following Sojish, a member of a scheduled caste, being assaulted by the former Panangad SI, Vipin AB. Sojish was taken into custody by a police team led by the former SI without proper authorization after being admitted to a hospital, leading to Sojish lodging a complaint with the commission. Despite a probe resulting in departmental actions against the SI, including a reprimand, no compensation had been provided until the government intervened. It was noted that the SI had the chance to present a counter-argument before the commission's final decision, which he did not do, prompting the government's decision to grant Rs 25,000 to Sojish.
